Aswan to Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is a long way south of Aswan, close to the Sudan border, and almost everyone gets there the same way: by road, before dawn. Here are the options, how long they take and what they cost in 2026.

UNESCO puts the temples 280 km south of Aswan; by road it is about 280 to 300 km of straight desert highway along the west side of Lake Nasser. There is no railway. You have four real choices: a tour by road, a flight, the public bus or a cruise that stops there.

The road wins on price and on choice. Flights save hours on the road but run on a thin schedule. The bus is cheap and slow, and getting back the same day is not guaranteed. Below is each one in turn, with the times and the honest catches.

The quick answer

By road it is about 3.5 hours each way; tours leave Aswan around 4am to 5am and you get about 2 hours at the temples. A shared day trip with hotel pickup starts at $40. The flight takes about 45 minutes, but schedules change and can be suspended. The public bus is the budget choice, best with a night in Abu Simbel.

How long does it take to drive from Aswan to Abu Simbel?

About 3.5 hours each way for roughly 280 to 300 km. With about 2 hours at the temples, a day trip from Aswan takes 8 to 10 hours door to door.

Estimates run from under 3 hours by car to 4 by coach, depending on stops and the vehicle. The road is straight and flat, with short stops at the checkpoints. Many people sleep the first half and wake to the sun coming up over the desert. If you are coming from further north, Abu Simbel is much closer to Aswan than to Luxor: about 480 km and roughly 6 hours from Luxor, which is why most Luxor trips run via Aswan or fly. Our Luxor and Cairo guide covers those.

The route is a bit long, it's 3 hours, but it's worth it!

Is there still a police convoy from Aswan to Abu Simbel?

Not the old convoy. Travel reports from 2025 and 2026 say tourist vehicles now drive on their own, but they still pass security checkpoints and travel in daylight.

For years every tourist vehicle had to leave Aswan together at a fixed hour under police escort. Recent travel writers (Earth Trekkers, December 2025, and others in 2026) describe that system as gone. What stays: checkpoints on the highway where police look at the vehicle and the driver's papers, and a daylight rule. The UK Foreign Office advises "Do not drive outside main cities and resorts at night" anywhere in Egypt. Licensed tour vehicles handle all of this, which is a big part of why most people go with one.

Carry your passport. You may not be asked for it, but checkpoints can check it. The early departure times you see on every listing follow from the long road and the daylight rule.

What time do tours leave Aswan for Abu Simbel?

Usually between 4am and 5am, with hotel pickup, getting back to Aswan in the early afternoon. A few private tours start later.

A typical shared day: pickup around 4am, arrival around 8am, about 2 hours at the temples, back in Aswan around 1pm. Private tours are more flexible; the private day with lunch lists an 8am pickup and about 3 hours at the site, with lunch by the lake. A later start means fewer people at the temples and more sun on your head.

Check the pickup rule for your hotel. On the shared tours, hotels on the islands, in Gharb Soheil, Nagaa al-Mahatta or New Aswan are not always included: on the day trip it is an add-on at checkout, on the group tour it is not included, and on the private tour it costs $10 extra per person. In winter the desert is cold before dawn (around 10 C in January), so bring a layer for the van.

Can you fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel?

Yes. EgyptAir flies Aswan to Abu Simbel in about 45 minutes (Air Cairo has also flown the route), but schedules change and flights can be suspended.

Abu Simbel Airport (code ABS) is a small field about 2 km from the village. Flight trackers show EgyptAir's morning flight from Aswan landing before noon on most days in October 2026, with return flights late morning and early afternoon. A shuttle bus runs from the airport to the temples, about 5 km. A flight day trip takes about 6 to 7 hours in total instead of 9 or 10.

The catch is reliability. There are only about 8 or 9 flights a week (Wego, May 2026), the timetable shifts, and in January 2026 EgyptAir briefly suspended Aswan and Abu Simbel flights because of a sandstorm (reported by Wego). Check the airline's timetable for your exact date before you plan around it. The private tour by flight bundles the car to Aswan airport, both flights, a guide and the entry ticket.

Very well-organized tour with a smooth flow. Our guide, Ahmed Achraf, gave good explanations about the temples and allowed us plenty of time to visit them.

Can you take the public bus from Aswan to Abu Simbel?

Yes, a public bus runs from Aswan bus station, near the railway station, around 8am, for about EGP 150 to 200, according to a May 2026 travel blog. A same-day return is not guaranteed.

It is the cheapest way south and the least predictable. There is no official online timetable for it, the trip is slower than a tour van, and you arrive when the temples are at their busiest and hottest. Buy the entry ticket at the gate with a card. The bus works best if you sleep in Abu Simbel and see the temples at 6am the next morning.

Are there hotels in Abu Simbel? A few. Seti Abu Simbel Lake Resort overlooks Lake Nasser, the Eskaleh Nubian Ecolodge is a mud-brick lodge near the temples, and there are some Nubian guesthouses. A night there also lets you see the sound and light show. The 2-day private tour packages the road, a hotel night, a felucca ride and the ticket.

Is the road from Aswan to Abu Simbel safe?

Visitors travel it every day with licensed tours along a checked route. The UK Foreign Office lists Aswan and Abu Simbel as exceptions to its Western Desert warning.

The UK advice, updated on 27 October 2026, warns against all but essential travel west of the Nile Valley, except for listed places that include Aswan and Abu Simbel. The US State Department rates Egypt Level 3, "Reconsider travel", warns against the Western Desert and border areas, and does not single out Abu Simbel. Read both before you go and follow the daylight and checkpoint routine; on a tour, the driver does that for you.

Is Abu Simbel worth the drive from Aswan?

Yes, for most people. Seven hours on the road buys you two of the most famous temples in Egypt, and the road is easy, if long.

The honest cost is the 4am alarm and a lot of desert. If that sounds bad, fly or stay the night; if it sounds fine, the shared van is the best value. What to pack:

  • Passport for the checkpoints.
  • A bank card if the ticket is not in your tour.
  • Water, sunscreen and a hat: there is little shade, and from May to September it is over 38 C by midday.
  • A warm layer for the van on winter mornings.
  • Small Egyptian pounds for tips and toilets.
