Abu Simbel from Luxor or Cairo

Abu Simbel is a long way from both: about 480 km by road from Luxor and about 870 km from Cairo. It can be done in a day from either, but most travellers get closer first, via Aswan, a Nile cruise or a flight.

Aswan is the gateway to Abu Simbel. It is the nearest city, about 280 to 300 km away, and nearly every road tour and flight to the temples starts there. If your Egypt trip is built around Luxor or Cairo, the question is how much of the distance you want to cover in one day.

This guide sets out the distances and times, the private day trip from Luxor, the Nile cruise that takes in Abu Simbel on the way to Luxor, the day tour from Cairo with flights, and the case for spending a night or two in Aswan instead.

The quick answer

Abu Simbel is closer to Aswan (about 280 to 300 km, 3.5 hours by road) than to Luxor (about 480 km, roughly 6 hours each way). From Luxor there is a 15-hour private day trip with the ticket, a guide and lunch included. From Cairo (about 870 km) you fly to Aswan and continue by car or plane; a 14-hour day tour packages it. A Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor or a night in Aswan makes the trip far less rushed.

Is Abu Simbel closer to Aswan or Luxor?

Aswan, by a long way. Abu Simbel is about 280 to 300 km by road from Aswan and about 480 km from Luxor.

From Aswan the drive takes about 3.5 hours each way. From Luxor it is roughly 6 hours each way, and the route passes Aswan anyway, which is why most Luxor trips either go through Aswan or start there after a cruise. From Cairo, about 870 km to the north, nobody drives: you fly south to Aswan in about 1 hour 20 minutes and continue from there.

Can you do Abu Simbel as a day trip from Luxor?

Yes. A private day trip leaves Luxor early and returns in the evening, about 15 hours in all, with the entry ticket, an English-speaking guide and lunch included, from $194.

The private day trip from Luxor picks you up at your hotel on the East Bank in the early morning and drives you south in an air-conditioned private car. A guide meets you at the temples, and lunch is in Aswan on the way back. West Bank pickup is an add-on, and Spanish, German or French guides are an option at extra cost. The tour holds 4.6 out of 5 from 688 reviews.

It is a very long day, and most of it is spent in the car. It suits travellers who are based in Luxor and have one free day. Hikari (Sep 2026) explained it well: "I had given up on visiting Abu Simbel Temple due to my schedule, but then I found an excursion that could be done as a day trip from Luxor." The same review describes the usual way the visit works: "I received a guided tour before entering Abu Simbel Temple, and although I went around alone, it was nice because I was able to take my time".

Can you see Abu Simbel on a Nile cruise?

Yes. Several cruises from Aswan to Luxor add Abu Simbel as an early-morning excursion, and a few cruises on Lake Nasser stop right below the temples.

The 4-day Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor is the classic version. Day 1 brings the High Dam and Philae; on day 2 you leave the ship at about 4:30am for Abu Simbel, then sail on to Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor, with a balloon flight over Luxor on the last morning. An Egyptologist guide comes along throughout. Site entry fees, Abu Simbel included, are not in the price; you pay them locally. The cruise starts from $580 and holds 4.5 out of 5 from 575 reviews.

Expect early starts. Ousmane (Oct 2026): "Be aware that you have to wake up at around 4 every day, but it is worth it." Coming from Luxor, you travel to Aswan first and board there.

Lake Nasser cruises are a different trip: ships such as the MS Eugenie sail south from Aswan over three nights, call at Nubian temples such as Kalabsha, Wadi El Seboua and Amada, and include a guided visit to Abu Simbel.

Four days from Aswan to Luxor on a 5-star ship, with an Egyptologist and the Abu Simbel excursion; temple entry fees are paid locally.

How do you get from Cairo to Abu Simbel?

Fly from Cairo to Aswan (about 1 hour 20 minutes), then go on by road (about 3.5 hours) or by the short flight to Abu Simbel (about 45 minutes).

There is no confirmed nonstop flight from Cairo to Abu Simbel. Routings from Cairo go through Aswan, and the Aswan to Abu Simbel flights, run by EgyptAir (Air Cairo has also flown the route), take about 45 minutes. The airport is about 2 km from the village, and a shuttle takes passengers to the temples.

Those small flights are the weak link. Schedules change, and they are sometimes suspended: EgyptAir briefly suspended Aswan and Abu Simbel flights in January 2026 because of a sandstorm. Leave slack in your plan, and do not book an international departure the same evening.

If you prefer the air route from Aswan, the private flight tour from Aswan wraps it into about 6 hours: hotel pickup, round-trip flights, an English-speaking guide and the entrance fee, from $450.

Is a day trip from Cairo to Abu Simbel worth it?

It is the only way to see Abu Simbel without spending a night in the south. The packaged day takes about 14 hours, flights, car, guide, ticket and lunch included, from $691.

The day tour from Cairo by air picks you up at your Cairo hotel, flies you to Aswan, drives you to Abu Simbel with a private guide, includes the entry fee and a late lunch, and flies you back the same evening. You need to send a passport copy to the local partner at least 2 days before. Pickups from the outer districts and the airports cost extra.

It works best for travellers with a fixed base in Cairo and little time. Because the day depends on two domestic flights, a delay eats into your time at the temples; keep the following morning free. Craig (Jun 2024) liked the simplicity: "everything from flights, pickup to and from hotel the driver and tour guide, lunch and tickets are all included."

If you have three or four days, a flight to Aswan, a night or two there and a road or air trip to Abu Simbel gives you a calmer version; our Aswan to Abu Simbel guide compares the options.

Luxor or Aswan: which is the better base for Abu Simbel?

Aswan, for Abu Simbel itself. Luxor is the base for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, and many people split their nights between the two, often by Nile cruise.

There is no single right answer, and the two cities do different jobs. From Aswan, Abu Simbel is a normal day trip: the classic day trip costs from $40 with the ticket as an option, the group tour includes the ticket and a guide, and the private tour gives you your own car and guide with the ticket included. Aswan also has Philae, the temple of Isis on Agilkia Island; the Philae half day adds it with the boat across and the ticket as an option.

How many days in Aswan? Two nights let you give one full day to Abu Simbel and another to Philae, the river and the city. Three nights leave room for a night in Abu Simbel itself. Luxor, with its tombs and temples, deserves its own days. A common shape is a few nights in Luxor, a cruise or transfer south, then Aswan.

On safety, the UK Foreign Office lists Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel as exceptions to its warning for the Western Desert. The US advisory rates Egypt as a whole at Level 3 and does not single out Abu Simbel. Tourist vehicles travel in daylight and pass security checkpoints on the way.
