The Abu Simbel Sun Festival

Twice a year, at sunrise, light runs deep into the Great Temple and lights the statues in its sanctuary. The dates are 22 February and 22 October, the next one is 22 February 2027, and the whole thing is over in about 20 minutes.

The architects of Ramesses II aligned the Great Temple so the rising sun reaches its innermost chamber on two days a year. When UNESCO and dozens of countries moved the temples in the 1960s, the engineers kept that alignment. Today the two dates are a festival: music and dancing outside, crowds from before dawn, and a few minutes of quiet inside when the light arrives.

This guide explains what happens and why, the dates and the next one, what the ticket costs on the day, how to be there in time from Aswan or from a bed in Abu Simbel, and whether a quieter day suits you better.

The quick answer

The Sun Festival takes place on 22 February and 22 October each year; the next is Monday 22 February 2027. Shortly after sunrise a beam travels about 60 m into the Great Temple and lights the statues of Ramesses II, Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhty for about 20 minutes. The ticket that day costs EGP 1,272 for foreign adults and EGP 670.5 for students (2026). Arrive in the dark, around 4am to 5am, and book a room in Abu Simbel early.

When is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?

On 22 February and 22 October every year. The next one is Monday 22 February 2027, then Friday 22 October 2027.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities fixes the event and its special ticket price on those two dates, and its official ticket site sells a separate "Sun Alignment" ticket for them. The light moves a little from year to year, and the days either side show a partial effect with smaller crowds. The 22nd remains the day of the festival, the gates and the ceremony.

The most recent alignment, on Thursday 22 October 2026, went ahead at dawn as planned, with the light inside the temple for about 20 minutes, according to the Associated Press.

What happens during the solar alignment?

Shortly after sunrise, sunlight enters the Great Temple, travels about 60 m to the sanctuary and lights three of its four seated statues for about 20 minutes.

The Great Temple faces east over Lake Nasser. On the alignment mornings the sun rises in line with the doorway, and the beam passes the colossi, crosses the hypostyle hall and the inner rooms, and reaches the back wall of the sanctuary. The National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics puts the distance at about 60 m, as reported by the AP.

Four gods sit there side by side. The light falls on Ramesses II, Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhty. The fourth, Ptah, a god linked to the underworld, stays in the dark. Then the beam slides away and the sanctuary returns to shadow.

UNESCO, in its description of the World Heritage site, says the temple's design allows the sun's rays to reach the innermost chamber twice a year. That is the whole spectacle: quiet, brief, and in a room that only holds a few people at a time. Our guide to the two temples walks you through the rest of the building.

Why does the sun line up with Abu Simbel on those dates?

Because the temple was built that way. The dates are traditionally linked to Ramesses II's birthday and coronation, though there is no direct evidence for that.

The temple was carved around 1264 to 1244 BC, and the alignment was part of the plan: Ramesses II sits in the sanctuary among the gods, and the sun reaches him there. The link with his birthday and his accession to the throne is the story you will hear on site; historians point out that it is a tradition rather than a recorded fact.

Two more details explain why the dates are what they are today. Over three thousand years the slow wobble of the Earth's axis has shifted the days a little. Then, in the 1960s, the whole temple was cut into blocks and rebuilt about 65 m higher and some 200 m back from the river, to save it from the Aswan High Dam's reservoir. The engineers kept the alignment, though the move may have made it a little less exact.

What is the Sun Festival like outside the temple?

Loud, cheerful and crowded. Folk troupes play and dance, people arrive in the night, and many watch the moment on a big screen outside.

The AP described hundreds of tourists and locals at the October 2026 alignment, some of whom slept outside the temple overnight, and costumed performers playing the tabla and the mizmar, a traditional drum and reed pipe. Egyptian press reports, citing Ahram Online, spoke of thousands of visitors, a large screen outside the hall, separate gates for entry and exit, and a Cultural Palaces festival from 17 to 22 October with six folk troupes.

Security is visible. For the 2022 event, Egypt Independent reported surveillance cameras, electronic gates and X-ray machines, plus golf carts from the gates for older visitors. Expect queues and bag checks in the dark.

The honest part: the sanctuary is small and the crowd is large. Not everyone is inside when the beam is at its best, and the people at the back see it on the screen. Many visitors are happy with that trade, because the atmosphere outside is half the reason to come.

How much is the Abu Simbel ticket on Sun Festival day?

EGP 1,272 for foreign adults and EGP 670.5 for students (2026), against EGP 822 and EGP 445.5 on other days. Under-6s go free.

The Ministry's official ticket site, egymonuments.com, lists a separate Sun Alignment price for 22 February and 22 October. The Ministry's printed price list shows EGP 1,200 and EGP 600 for the same days, against EGP 750 and EGP 375 normally; the online portal prices below are the ones to plan with. Prices are set by the Ministry and can change, so check the portal before you go.

The ticket office takes bank cards, not cash. If you book a tour with the ticket included, such as the group tour with the entry ticket or the private tour from Aswan, tell the operator your date is an alignment day and check that the ticket in the price is the festival one. On the classic day trip the ticket is an option at booking, and on the Nile cruise you pay temple entries locally. More on prices in our ticket guide.

How do you attend the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?

Sleep in Abu Simbel if you can and be at the gate in the dark, around 4am to 5am. From Aswan, book a tour that is planned around the event and ask about the pickup time.

The alignment happens shortly after sunrise, which is why the people who see it from inside the sanctuary are the ones who queued first. A bed in the village makes that easy: you walk or drive a few minutes instead of spending the night on the road. Rooms fill months ahead, so book as soon as you know your date.

  • From Aswan by road: about 280 to 300 km, roughly 3.5 hours each way. On festival dates ask the operator when they plan to leave and where they will be at sunrise.
  • Two days: the two-day private tour includes a night in an Abu Simbel hotel; agree the festival morning with the operator when you book.
  • By air: flights from Aswan take about 45 minutes, but the scheduled flights do not land before dawn, and schedules change.
  • Bring: a warm layer (February dawns are cool), your passport, a bank card for the ticket, small notes, water and a light for the dark.

It works on a day trip too. Appera (Oct 2026), on the classic day trip from Aswan: "We arrived in Sun festival and able to see the full experience, that's what counts." Our February 2027 Sun Festival post tracks this year's arrangements.

Is the Sun Festival worth it, or is a normal day better?

It depends on what you came for. The festival is an event with a crowd; a normal day early in the morning is the calmer way to see the temples themselves.

Pick the festival if the moment matters to you: sunrise over Lake Nasser, music in the dark, and a few minutes of light on statues carved more than 3,000 years ago. You pay more for the ticket, you queue, and you might see the beam on a screen rather than in the sanctuary.

Pick a normal day if you want space. The sanctuary is open every day, the four statues are there whatever the date, and an early visit in winter is usually much quieter. A middle path is the 21st or the 23rd, when the light still reaches in part and fewer people come. For month-by-month timing, see our best time to visit guide.
